Happy Tummies @ Fluffed Cafe & Dessert Bar

As far as I could remember, my first introduction to waffles must have been A&W's.

A&W drive in was one of our family's favorite hang out place in the 80s.
I distinctly remember dad's green Ford, windows wind down, my sis & i bopping up & down in the vehicle, excitedly awaiting the waiter coming with a tray laden with a tall cold mug of root beer float and a plate of warm classic waffle, complete with butter & maple syrup. We were content!

Fast forward 3 decades later...
I was feeling a bit nostalgic when i finally visited FLUFFED CAFE & DESSERT BAR to give my own 2 kids & hubby a treat since it's the big boy's birthday.

Nestled in a fairly old neighborhood, not far from where i grew up, sits Fluffed.
It's tucked in between ordinary shophouses and that appealed to me because it had this subtle quiet charm.

I have always had a thing for large windows that lets in generous amount of natural light. Fluffed had that - plus a panel of white washed brick wall.

I first noticed their beautiful, enticing photos on my instagram feed. I know sometimes photos play up the actual dish but i'm so thrilled to share that the first bite was all it took to win our hearts (and tastebuds)!

The waffle-ice cream joints that we've been to, we are served a nice waffle, topped with a dollop of ice cream., and perhaps one or two toppings. Fluffed takes waffles to a whole new level.

Their ice creams too are made with 100% natural ingredients.
We were recommended their newly launched Tau Fu Fa ice cream.  
Creamy tofu & soymilk ice cream with ginger-infused gula Melaka syrup. 
A refreshing take from the traditional. Highly recommend this!

We also tried the Pooh Bear's Favourite @ RM18.
hokeypokey icecream + salted caramel + crushed honeycomb + fruits

The marriage of salted caramel & sweet honeycomb gave the waffle such a nice crunch.
I can imagine Pooh Bear giving two thumbs up along with his 2 feet up in the air for approval!
It was that good!

I'm always drawn to business startup stories so I did a little interview with the man behind Fluffed to find out how this dessert place came to be. With a nutrition background, Charles worked in sales for 8 months but didn't find his passion there. He took to baking from home and started an online bakery under the name Charles Cakes & Confectionaries. After 3 years of baking, he decided to work as a barista to gain some experience. Last November, Fluffed Cafe & Dessert Bar was born. Today, they are still striving to make everything in the shop themselves to give patrons a taste & experience real, authentic homemade desserts.

We can't wait to visit again to try out their other fairytale inspired waffles eg Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland & handcrafted ice creams. They serve cakes, macarons & coffee too!

Our sweetie turns 3!

Leah has been waking up with a "Is it June yet?" greeting for the last 3 weeks prior to her birthday.

Excited about the fact she has grown taller... she realizes it herself because her long dresses have grew much shorter ;) and that she is diaper-free, stating matter-of-factly she is now ready to go to school & take ballet classes.

She's been loving cupcakes, popsicles & macarons.

So that part was easy... marrying the things she love & coming up with the colors & design.

Pink is without a doubt her favorite color (i'm not a pink fan) so i added in pops of pastels to give it a less girly pink look.

June has been a busy busy work & training month for me so the only pocket of available time i had was a Monday morning during the recent school break.

We planned for a small party, with family & cousins & her "roomies" (friends whom she grew up with) so that they could have some fun cupcake decorating activity & a nice crowd size which could fit into our little home.

To keep things simple & fuss free, we ordered pizzas, bread sticks & chicken wings from Papa John's.

My cousin homemade Leah's favorite donuts & my favorite brownies (i can eat a dozen of them without sharing)!

For the cupcake decorating activity, she baked cupcakes & icing all in rainbow shades of pastel colors while i bought toppings eg sprinkles, choc chip, edible balls, hearts etc.

Leah chose her own birthday cake which was store bought from wondermilk.

Little guests went home with a favor box each with their names on it - to bring home their cupcake creation together with ice cream shaped cookie pops, & a few other dessert treats.

Godma & family bought her the most cutest of tutu skirt which came with a matching top, which she wore promptly & fitted the theme to the T!

Gong gong bought her this lovely set of ice cream dessert parlor play set.

Thank you to everyone who came & celebrated with us, & all who helped out with making this small party a memorable one for our sweetheart.

When life gives you lemons, make LEMONADE

been on a crazy ride since the year started & it has escalated within the last 2 months.
having to tend to sick kids one after another, work & family issues, coping with the little missy still waking up every 2 hours a night, and a whole list of other challenges.
i'm being stretched beyond my comfort zone.

someone once said, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
times like these, i just long for some sense of normalcy in my day.

15 minutes of "me time" ie slump in my couch, sipping my hot mug of green tea, looking out to the vast sky from the window of my work room normally gives me a few moments of tranquility.


on several occasions, i find myself taking out my sketchbooks & thinking of things that inspire me.
i start writing & doodling sweet things on paper,  & then make a quick breakfast of sunny-side up & a cool glass of iced honey lemon, before i jumped back into the fray.
my form of instant perk-me-up to stave off a really horrible, terrible, no good day.
i relish this moments, even if it's only for mere few minutes.

last wednesday was a public holiday & all i wanted to do was to go out with the family, a lazy day out just for some cheap + good desserts.

i've been longing to go to ben's @ publika.
haven't had this luxury for some time now so just wanted to take a break, take in the sights & sounds.

totally lurve the white washed furniture, windows & yellow cheery walls (my next big project - get my work room painted in yellow)!

 family + good company (thanks for spending the afternoon with us, mich) + yummy desserts

i'm recharged & all ready for another week ahead.

 this little nugget never fails to make us smile

 .. no matter how hard the day had been

i SCREAM for ICE CREAM!

our tropical weather is on a bit of a mood swing lately.

one moment it's pouring cats & dogs, and the very next, it's blazing HOT! 

like this very minute, it's a sweltering 33C!

which means... there's no better time for I.C.E C.R.E.A.M.S!! =D

on days when i just wanna take a breather but don't feel like splurging, we'll head out to mcdonald's or ikea for a dose of regular soft served ice cream. 

there's something about this creamy substance that perks you up instantly...

you know, the feeling when it sends your heart a flutter... u hear birds chirping... erm... okay....stop ... it must be the heat doing weird stuff to me...

ok where was i?

oh yes! and since ice creams are generally everyone's best friend, i thought it'll make a sweet gesture to put together an inexpensive, simple ice-cream-kit and present it to a friend.

supplies:

toppings put in clear mini plastic containers

paper + ribbons in matching color

*mini cones i got from king's (available in hypermarkets)

arrange cones & all toppings into individual packs/containers. 

dress it up simply with  a ribbon or scalloped-cut craft paper. 

finish it off with a sweet handwritten message on a doily.

my faithful pastel bucket... always work wonders!

here's to 

sunshine + laughter + choco tops!

tip: by keeping things in a cohesive theme.. eg i picked baby blue, the kit makes for a pretty sight.

all the recipient needs now is a tub of ice cream :)
